"The letters from Siberia were written between 1943 and 1965. Their authors were representatives of Latvia's intelligentsia, as well as farmers who became unacceptable in the eyes of the Soviet regime because of their public activities, civic position or demonstrated opposition. They were arrested, sent to heavy labour camps, or deported to Siberia on June 14, 1941, and/or March 25, 1949. The children of such individuals were also deported. All of the letters are originals, and they were written on the material that was available at prison camps or other places of settlement – birch bark. People wrote to friends and relatives in Latvia and abroad, and these texts speak to the most tragic moments of 20th-century Latvia, as well as the world views of those who had been oppressed."
From the book's Foreword.
