"Lidija Lasmane-Doroņina (b. 1925)
was a political prisoner and member of the Latvian resistance movement during the Soviet occupation of her homeland from 1944–1991. She spent 14 of her birthdays in Soviet prisons ad forced labor camps.
Her Christian faith and unwavering love of her nation sustained her as she endured many humiliations during three separate terms of incarceration. As she nears the age of 100, she rejoices in God, in the freedom that her beloved Latvia has regained, and in her many grandchildren. With every step that she takes and with every utterance that she makes, Lidija offers a silent prayer for those who did not return from the battlefields, the prison camps, and forced exile in the USSR.
Lidija says that her mission is to live and to bear witness, like a glorious sunset that tells the story of the preceding day."
