We invite you to the lecture “Diplomatic Relations between Latvia and Norway from the founding of Latvia to the renewal of independence” by the Norwegian writer and lawyer Hege Boman Grundekjøn. The lecture will be held on at 16:00, on Thursday 14 February, at the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia, Raiņa bulvārī 7.

Grundekjøn’s lecture will focus on the first Honorary Latvian Consul in Norway’s contribution to diplomatic relations between Latvia and Norway. Artūrs Vanags emigrated to Norway during the 1905 Revolution. He later became the first Honorary Consul of Latvia in Norway. He tried throughout his life to build bridges between Norway and Latvia.

In 2011 Grundekjøn received an award from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia for her outstanding contribution to the promotion of Latvian-Norwegian cultural relations. Already during the Soviet period she actively participated in the struggle for independence of the Baltic States by publishing several articles in the media about human rights violations in Communist Eastern Europe.

In 2009 Grundekjøn published the book “Latvia with Knut Hamsun and Kārlis Padegs”. The book not only covers the popularity of Knut Hamsun and his translation work in Latvia, but there are also chapters on Latvian history and Latvian refugees in Norway after the Second World War.

Hege Boman Grundekjøn's partner Arvid Grundekjøn is the Latvian honorary general counsel in Oslo.

The lecture will be held in English. Entrance is free.
