An Ambitious Memorial to Commemorate the Victims of Communism has been Opened in Tallinn

29.08.2018.

On Thursday 23 August, on the anniversary of the signing of the Hitler-Stalin pact, a new and ambitious memorial was opened in Maarjamäe Palace Park, in Tallinn, to remember the victims of the Communist Terror. The first section of the memorial, the 'Journey', is a long tunnel created by two high, black stone walls. Carved into the walls are the names of more than 22,000 Estonians who were murdered or died due to the Communist Terror. Many of these victim's graves are unknown.

Moving through the memorial the visitor enters the second part, the 'House Garden', where apple trees grow and beehives stand. They symbolizes how people were taken, without mercy, from their homes, but only a few were able to return to their home and homeland.
