During the Soviet occupation of Latvia 61 years ago, on the morning of 5 December 1963, 22-year-old student Bruno Javoišs, risking his life, hoisted the red-white-red flag of independent Latvia atop the 76-meter-high radio tower in front of the Riga City Main Militia Headquarters.
Due to the difficulties of removal, the Latvian flag remained on the radio tower all day, compelling heads to lift and look with hope at the symbol of independence.
For this heroic act, Bruno Javoišs was arrested and sentenced to seven years of imprisonment in a penal camp in the Mordovian ASSR.
To honour all members of the national resistance movement, the monument “Defying Foreign Power” by sculptor Kristaps Gulbis is to be installed in place of the radio tower (Radio iela 1, Riga). We invite you to support the project with a donation.
When purchasing a Museum souvenir with the "Defying Foreign Power" symbol (such as a T-shirt, trinkets or magnets), you are supporting the creation of the monument and landscaping its surroundings. Then don't forget to ask an employee for the "Defying Foreign Power" bookmark!
If you want to make a larger donation, please to do so by bank transfer.
