A Look Back at the Commemoration of the Victims of Communist Genocide

25.03.2025.

Today, on 25 March, we commemorate the tragic event of 25 March 1949, when the Soviet regime deported more than 42,000 inhabitants of Latvia to Siberia, robbing them of their homes, loved ones and future in their homeland.

To commemorate these victims of the communist genocide several hundred people gathered at the Memorial for the Victims of the Soviet Occupation Regime in Riga. Tālis Veismanis, Chairman of the Latvian Association of the Politically Repressed, and Edgars Rinkēvičs, President of Latvia, addressed the audience, reminding them of the consequences of this genocide and the importance of remembering and learning from our history, especially in the context of the Ukrainian war.
