Awakening of the Latvian Spirit

Students will get acquainted with the events and people of the period of the Third Awakening and the restoration of the independence of the Republic of Latvia. The elements of the museum’s exhibition and a wide range of video materials are used in the lesson. The lesson will help pupils to understand the situation before the Third Awakening, the most important events and the activity of organizations during this period. However, the main focus will be the strength of people’s spirit that became apparent when they stood against environmental damage and when they bravely went to the Freedom Monument, surrounded by militia, to commemorate the anniversaries of particular events. With the Singing Revolution and the Baltic Way, we will emphasize one of the core values of democracy – the freedom of speech and belief.
