Stand Up for Your Country. The Barricades

Students will get acquainted with the events of the Barricades from January till August 21, 1991, when Latvia’s people defended their country and regained full independence. We will try to answer some questions: What was the transitional period like from de jure to de facto independence? Can nonviolent resistance stop tanks and OMON officers? What gave courage to the people, and what was their motivation? The guide will discuss values, courage, Latvia 30 years ago and now with the students because the topic of the lesson is not just history. Together we will try to understand the power of united people and the value of a state’s independence. Before the lesson, we will invite students to find out about the experiences and emotions of their family members and neighbors during the Barricades.
