The Exhibition is called "The National Basketball Team – First European Champions!”

03.09.2025.

Until 14 September, the exhibition The National Basketball Team – First European Champions! Their victory – our honour. Their fate – our history is open and can be viewed free of charge in the vestibule of the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia (Latviešu strēlnieku laukums 1, Riga).

This exhibition is dedicated to the Latvian national basketball team, who won the gold medal at the inaugural FIBA EuroBasket tournament in Geneva, Switzerland, from 2 to 4 May 1935, becoming the first European champions. Latvia secured a historic victory in the final match, defeating Spain 24:18. This remains the greatest success in Latvian basketball history to date.

The exhibition focuses on a sporting victory and the experiences of the players and their coaches during and after the Second World War. These experiences include the loss of their country's independence, its occupation by the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany, and their lives as refugees and victims of political persecution.
