Starting May 6, 2026, an audio guide in Spanish is available at the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia, supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain. The launch event was attended by H.E. Manuel Alama Orenes, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain, together with his team, certified Spanish-language guides from Riga, and representatives of the tourism sector.
To make the museum's content more accessible to tourists from Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries, the museum initiated cooperation with the Spanish Embassy last autumn, with the Embassy undertaking to provide the translation of the audio guide. The audio guide text in Spanish was recorded by the Ambassador himself - Mr. Orenes - thus becoming the first ambassador whose voice will be heard by museum visitors as they explore the exhibition with the audio guide.
At the presentation, the Ambassador emphasised that translating and recording the audio guide text required not only a technical rendering of its content, but also a genuine feeling for it - conveying it in a manner, form, and intonation that would be clear, comprehensible, and accessible to every Spanish speaker. The need for a Spanish-language audio guide had moreover been evident for some time, as visitors from Spain and Latin America rank fifth among the museum's visitor groups.
The museum covered the cost of the recording studio, while the devices were purchased through the project "Improved Accessibility of Latvian-Estonian Military Heritage Tourism Product" (MIL-HER ACCESSIBLE).
The museum currently offers audio guides in nine languages - Latvian, English, Estonian, Lithuanian, Russian, German, Ukrainian, Italian, and Spanish - as well as two video guides for visitors with hearing impairments, in International Sign Language and Latvian Sign Language.
The museum expresses its gratitude to the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain, Ambassador Manuel Alama Orenes, and his team for their productive cooperation and commitment to enhancing the tourism offering at the Museum and in Riga.
