Lessons

The Story of the Flag

The aim of the lesson: to understand significant events of 20th-century Latvian history through the flag of the Republic of Latvia as a symbol of freedom and resistance.

Students will explore different aspects of Latvian history by analyzing historical sources, with a focus on the meaning of the flag during specific time periods: the flag as a symbol of freedom in independent Latvia in the 1920s–30s; the flag as a symbol of hope and Latvian identity during the Second World War and the occupation period; the flag as a symbol of resistance used by members of both armed and nonviolent resistance groups in occupied Latvia and in exile; the flag as a symbol of humanity and Latvian identity preserved by those repressed by the Soviet regime; and the flag as a symbol of nonviolent struggle for the restoration of independence.

Students will seek answers not only to historical questions but also reflect on what the Latvian flag means to them and their families.

During the lesson, students will:
1.    take part in a guided tour of the exhibition with thematic emphasis appropriate to the lesson;
2.    work in groups in the exhibition – searching for information and analyzing sources;
3.    discuss, summarize, and present the conclusions of their group work in the classroom
