The aim of the lesson: to understand the course of the 1949 deportations carried out by the Soviet authorities and the lives of people in exile.
During the lesson, students will learn about the experiences of deported individuals by working with historical sources – drawings by Benita Pleze and fragments of her video testimony.
By analyzing these sources, students will seek answers to the following questions:
• What emotions did deported families experience at the time of arrest and at the beginning of the long journey?
• What emotional trauma and physical hardships did deportees face on their way to Siberia?
• What difficulties did exiled people encounter in the places of settlement, and how did they overcome them?
• What values, attitudes, and work ethics helped Latvians survive in a foreign and harsh environment?
• What hardships did deported children experience?
• In such circumstances, what brought joy to Benita?
