The aim of the lesson: to understand how resistance to the Soviet occupation regime took place and why it is important to stand up against evil in history and today.
Students will explore the exhibition, focusing on key concepts related to the topic – occupation, annexation, armed resistance, nonviolent resistance, and repression. Afterwards, students will search the exhibition for answers to the questions: what individuals and organizations stood FOR and AGAINST, both in occupied Latvia and in exile, what methods they used, and what happened to them.
Then, together, they will analyze the information. At the end of the lesson, students will participate in an improvised demonstration, “Don’t Be Indifferent, Be Active,” for which they will prepare a poster about an issue relevant to them – what they currently stand FOR or AGAINST.
During the lesson, students will:
1. take part in a guided tour of the exhibition with thematic emphasis appropriate to the lesson;
2. work in groups in the exhibition – searching for information and analyzing sources;
3. discuss, summarize, and present the conclusions of their group work in the classroom.
