Students will find out how the Soviet Union occupied the independent Republic of Latvia, what is a totalitarian regime and how it influenced people's lives. During the lesson, we will try to answer some questions: Why did the authorities and repressive structures of Soviet Latvia persecute and arrest people? What is nonviolent resistance, and is there a point to it? Who are the dissidents, and what gave them courage? What happened to the people who kept the idea of Latvia's freedom despite the Soviet occupation? During the lesson, we will pay attention to values - courage and fear, lies and truth in Latvia then and nowadays, because the topic of the lesson is not just history. Together we will try to understand what the freedom of Latvia and its symbols mean to modern young adults.
