The international conference “The Barricades: civil resistance to anti-democratic rule and lessons learned”, January 15th in Riga, was organized to mark the 25th anniversary of the January barricades of 1991. The goal of this conference was to evaluate non-violent resistance against anti-democratic regimes as an essential and effective expression of direct democracy. It is useful to compare civil resistance with violence and terrorism that are presently wide-spread, as the latter do not usually further striving by a people for freedom. The episode of the Barricades in the Baltic States is not only instructive, but their study allows drawing conclusions about how best to resolve current conflicts within international system. Presentations made at the conference by experts the theory of civil resistance, political scientists and historians from the USA and the Baltic States as well as discussion by participants of the Barricades are published in this book.
